5 Tips to Make Habits Stick

A routine becomes a habit when it is completed consistently without a checklist or reminder. Routines are the first step in creating sustainable habits that can ultimately have a tremendous positive impact on your life.

It is important for your habits to align with your goals. The first step is to determine what you’re working towards! Do you want to get more sleep so you can be more productive and feel healthier and stronger? Do you intend to use a calendar so you can be more effective at planning for your career, school or family? Do you want to exercise regularly so you can run a marathon?

Whatever your goal, fostering habits will be the best strategy towards success.

Remember, taking it slow is important!

What are some small steps you might take to reach your larger goal?

Here are some tips to make habits stick:

  1. SET EXPECTATIONS: When you are getting started, be creative and set clear expectations with yourself. Soon, those routines will come second nature and you will be completing the tasks mindlessly… practicing habits!

  2. USE REMINDERS: You can also help to set some reminders- this can be a Post It on the fridge, a notification on an app or any method that works for you.

  3. MAKE IT SIMPLE: This could be as simple as putting on sneakers each day or setting an earlier alarm. Completing these routines consistently will help you develop the necessary habits.

  4. USE AN APP: You might try using a habit tracker (you can find some great templates on Pinterest! or use a range of apps on your iPhone) to ensure you are maintaining your routines.

  5. CELEBRATE WINS: Of course, don’t forget to celebrate when you’ve reached your goal!
